Petroleum is a mineral found in the earth that occurs naturally. It is a yellowy black substance that comes in liquid form. Most of the time petroleum is used to make fuel. Drilling for oil has stopped so that they can extract the petroleum from the ground. People were worried that they would run out of oil after a few years. Petroleum is an interesting substance in how it is made.

Algae is organisms that are made through the process of photosynthesis. Zooplankton is an organism found in the ocean. When these things die in the ground, they can become petroleum. It takes only a couple of years for algae, dead animals and zooplankton to decompose, but it usually takes many years for the algae to become petroleum.
