No, it isn't. While rheumatoid arthritis isn't hereditary, your genetics can increase your chances of developing this autoimmune disorder. Researchers have established a number of the genetic markers that increase this risk. These genes are associated with the immune system, chronic inflammation, and with rheumatoid arthritis in particular.

Causes. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition, which means it's caused by the immune system attacking healthy body tissue. However, it's not yet known what triggers this. Your immune system normally makes antibodies that attack bacteria and viruses, helping to fight infection.

If you have a severe case of rheumatoid arthritis, you should be able to qualify for Social Security disability benefits. Through the Social Security Administration (SSA), the federal government provides these cash payments to those who are unable to work due to an illness or injury for at least a year.
