A switch filters and forwards traffic that is based on certain criteria. Abridge and a router is bothan example of a switch. Aswitch is able to manage multiple, simultaneous pairs of connections between communicating systems. Switches can in many cases be used as a network concentrator that will split flat network segments into dedicated communication links. Switches are able to splitcollision domains but can also provide a greater aggregate bandwidth between groups ofcommunicating devices. Switches can also improve the overall performance.
