This topic is interesting because the Bible does not explicitly condemn polygamy or bigamy. For instance, in Genesis 4:19, it was stated that “And Lamech took two wives. The name of one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah” and in 1 Kings 11:3 wherein Solomon “had 700 wives, who were princesses, and 300 concubines. And his wives turned away his heart.” However, it is worthy to note that although God allowed polygamy or bigamy, it does not necessarily mean that He thought it was ideal. In the New Testament, it was clearly stated that a man should love his wife, not wives.

Even though God allowed polygamy or bigamy before, Romans 13:1 states that “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God and those that exist have been instituted by God.” – this means that our law which prohibits polygamy or bigamy should be upheld because God only allowed it, but He did not command it.
