It is far more practical compared to full mesh topology. Some of the systems are joined in a similar fashion as in mesh topology while nests of the systems are only connected to one or two devices. A partial mesh topology can be designed to provide an optimal route between selected sites while avoiding the expense of interconnecting every site to every other site.

They are predominantly used in the peripheral networks that connect to a fully meshed backbone. Partial mesh topology is far less expensive to implement.

At least some nodes have multiple connections to the network.
