Odysseus disguises himself as a beggar and when he meets Penelope (his actual wife) he
weaves a complex story about how he came from Crete, fought in Troy and then later played as
a host to Odysseus himself. Penelope has been planning on marrying another suitor because
she has given up on the return of Odysseus.

When she asks for proof the beggar describes
Odysseus down to the clothing he wore, the weapons he carried, and the men he had with him.
Thus a complex tale is woven on how the beggar met Odysseus. Penelope is skeptical but she
also wants to believe him. She ends up offering the beggar to stay the night.
