The 1994 book “Snow Falling on Cedars” was written by David Guterson. The book took 10 years to write, since he was doing it in the mornings before he would teach for the day. It follows a Japanese American in the 1950s, after World War II. The Japanese American is accused of being a murderer, the killer of a man well-respected in the town. He is profiled because of the racial tensions that were going on due to World War II.

Guterson left teaching soon after he wrote this book, and became a writer full time once the book was done. Several schools, however, have challenged or banned this book because it has sexual content, which they say has “no place in an American high school”. Yet they still teach us Shakespeare, with all his innuendo.
