Dalton Trumbo wrote the novel “Johnny Got His Gun”. The book was so good that it won the National Book Award for the best original fiction in 1939. This is commonly thought to be an anti-war novel, but it’s often said that the book is about so much more than that if you read it deeper than a passing read for fun.
The book focuses on a man named Joe Bonham. He wakes, in the first chapter of the novel, in the hospital after a bomb explosion on the battlefield. He has lost a lot of his extremities, and is basically a prisoner in his own body. He wants to die, but finds that he’s unable to control how he breathes any longer.
