“The Yearling” was written by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. After it came out in 1938, it was the best selling book for twenty-three weeks in a row. That’s kind of crazy. The book focuses on Jody Baxter, a young boy who really wants a pet. However, his home life makes that a little difficult to accomplish. It begins to be difficult with the fact that the family has lost other kids in infancy, and that makes it hard for Ma Baxter - Jody’s mother - to bond with him.

The difficulties continue as Jody is informed that they can’t even really afford to feed themselves, let alone a pet too. The book focuses on his fight for a pet in boyhood, and his fight to realize what it means to be a man in his teenage and early adult years.
