Vincent Persichetti wrote “Divertimento for Band, Opus 42” in 1949. This is actually when he first started writing this piece, but that’s beside the point. It was first performed some time later by the Goldman Band. In fact, Persichetti wrote it specifically for the Goldman Band, so it’s not too surprising that this is the first band to have played it.
As a side note, Persichetti was able to support himself off his musical talents by age 11. That’s how good this composer was. He started using his musical abilities at 11 to make money, and by the time he was old enough to have the free time to write, he had the money to make that a feasible idea.
