No one is quite sure when this was penned, although it is speculated that it was penned in the late 1990s or early 2000s. It has been performed by middle and high school bands in affluent areas, as well as by big time orchestras and bands. The piece is about 13 minutes long, longer depending on how skilled the band is with the piece.
It takes a phrase from Samuel 2:11 in the scriptures as the title: “In the Spring, at the time When Kings Go Off To War”. The piece acts like a storyboard for the wars between the native Islamic people of the Middle East and the Catholic crusaders of the medieval times. In this regard, it’s a bit like the piece “Scherezade” for the orchestra.
