Who initially did experimental work in the fine art media, then moved on to be one of the early icons of straight photography?

He isn’t really an artist, but there is no evidence of an artist that worked in the fine arts before becoming a straight photographer. Instead, most of the credit for straight photography and being famous in it goes to Alfred Stieglitz. Stieglitz was an American-born photographer. He got his start in a photography business that barely ever made a profit because of a high wage paid to the employees and lower commissions than most other companies took when doing photography.


For those unaware of what straight photography is, it’s basically photography that has a lot of clarity, a sharp focus, and little cropping. It basically takes the photograph and elevates it artistically, without taking any of the original photograph away from the final product.
