Sickle cell disease is a disorder that affects a person’s blood. It is inherited by one or both biological parents. When a person has sickle cell disease, then the person may experience signs of the disease when they are merely a baby.

Sometimes, the disease can show its signs as early as six months old. If someone is experiencing sickle cell disease, then he or she may have swelling in the feet or hands, infections and it could lead to a stroke. The hemoglobin in the blood is what is affected in a person with sickle cell disease. A type of sickle cell disease is called sickle cell anemia. Anemia is when someone’s blood does not have enough iron in it.
