Many foods can cause gout to flare up. Gout itself is caused by uric acid that builds up and crystallizes in the body and in the joints. There are quite a few foods that doctors will recommend you avoid or completely remove from your diet during a flare-up. One such food is beer and wine. Many alcoholic drinks will have uric acid in them, and there’s a double whammy for people with gout. Alcoholic beverages also make it harder for uric acid to leave the body. Yikes.

This is why many doctors will simply recommend that you stay away from alcohol during a flare-up. Another food that doctors recommend staying away from is salmon and shrimp. Well, basically any seafood. Small amounts are okay, but be careful.
