There are six things that will determine if evidence is reliable or not. The first one is the independence of the provider. Is the provider of the evidence working alone or it is only placing planted evidence? The effectiveness of internal controls is also another thing that will be considered to know if the evidence is true or not. The auditors' direct knowledge will also be important as this can be served as first-hand knowledge about the situation.

The individuals who are providing the evidence will also be considered. What if the person is not reliable at all? This can become a problem in the long run. Lastly, the timeliness of the evidence will also be checked.

There are six characteristics that are known to increase the reliability of evidence. These six characteristics are the following: The independence of the provider. The information that comes from outside is considered to be more reliable as compared to the information that comes from the inside. Another characteristic is the effectiveness of the internal controls.

Another needed characteristic is the direct information gathered by the auditor based on tests and inspection. The person who provides outside evidence should be someone who is classified to provide the needed information. The evidence that is gathered should be very objective. It should show that it is with no doubt, an evidence. The last characteristic of a reliable evidence is timeliness. The evidence should have occurred at the right time.
