The tonotopic map of the auditory cortex has a columnar organization that is laid out sequentially from low to high frequencies. Different frequencies of sound will be processed in these specific areas. Anterior correspondes to lower freqs and posterior corresponds to higher freqs. Binaural columns refers to sound input from the right and left ears.

These columns are perpendicular to the frequency columns discussed previously. In one area of the brain we receive mostly right ear info and next to that we receive mostly left ear info. Cells right in the middle of binaural columns only respond to 1 ear whereas cells in between the binraul columns will respond to both ears.
