Some US business leaders wanted Hawaii to be annexed to the United States because they wanted to have access to the Hawaiian sugar. This is because during that period, Hawaiian sugar trade was a very profitable business in the continental USA. The first time when sugar farms got permanently planted was in Kauai during the year 1835.

Sugar had a great role to play in the economy of Hawaii during that time. Within thirty years of the first plantation, up to four plantations were formed in the main islands. This is the main reason why US business leaders had great interest in the sugar trade.
