The Odd Egg is a children’s book written by author Emily Gravett. The first line of the book says, “All the birds had laid an egg.” However, it is soon discovered that the duck is the odd bird out as it has not laid an egg. The duck finds an egg instead and it quite happy about it. The other birds think the egg the duck has found is an odd egg indeed.
The other birds ridicule the duck for the odd egg she has found but she gives the egg all of her love and nurtures and protects it as though she has laid it herself. The ending of the book is controversial to many because the creature inside the egg the duck has nurtured turns out to be a quite scary creature that frightens and perhaps even eats the other birds that have hatched.
