Rudyard Kipling wrote a short story called How the first letter was written. It tells a story of a very crafty little neolithic girl that was trying to help her father after he broke his spear and needed to have her retrieve his other one so he could continue fishing.
She writes out a letter of sorts for a stranger whom she is seeking help from. The letter is actually composed of pictures that are supposed to convey what she needed. Therefore according to this story the first ever letter actually did not have any words but instead was completely composed of pictures.
