In the book (and the movie) “Ella Enchanted”, Ella is not born with any gifts. Her fairy godmother, however, gives her the gift of obedience. This leads to hilarity in some cases as Ella is forced to obey everything she’s told to do. However, as with most Cinderella rewrites, the stepmother and her stepsisters take advantage of this. She’s told to tell her best friend she can’t see her anymore because of something in the marketplace, she’s arrested because of said escapade in the marketplace, etc.
SPOILER ALERT: the curse is broken when Ella learns how to find her fairy godmother and get it reversed. In this time, she encounters many magical creatures, and she falls head over heels for the prince - who, coincidentally, would rather have nothing to do with her but falls for her when fate intervenes.
