A vault is a curved ceiling over a room that is commonly used in Roman architecture. The parts of the vault exert a lateral force that requires a counter resistance, allowing it to stand. Some vaults are built in underground rooms which allows the counterforce for the vault to occur naturally from the ground above the vault. There are 6 different types of vaults:

• Dome
• Pitched brick barrel vault
• Barrel vault
• Groin vaults
• Rib vault
• Fan vault
The simplest form of a vault is the barrel vault which is commonly semicircular in shape and is one continuous arch, generally greater in length than in diameter.
