Damian Domingo was a Chinese Filipino painter who was the first Filipino painter to paint his self-portrait. Damian was the first of many when it came to being a Filipino painter immersed in the western techniques of painting. Domingo over saw the development of art as the director of the first official art academy in the Phillipines as well establishing the school. The academy taught many methods of art inicluding the Western styles and techniques which revolutionized the art world for the Phillipines.
The students were taught techniques of drawing still life and the human form as well as colors and surface preparation. When Domingo died in 1834, the school was unable to maintain the standards Domingo had set and closed in 1834.
