North and South Dakota joined the United States on November 02, 1889. North Dakota and South Dakota entered the United States of America on the same day. There was a dispute over the capital of the Dakota territory. The people in the north wanted it in one place, while the people in the south wanted it in another place. So, when they applied for stateship in 1889, they applied as North Dakota and South Dakota.

When the Dakota territory first came into America’s rule, it was pretty much left alone. There was a lot of tension between those who did go - mostly fur trappers - and the Native Americans that lived there before they were brought under the government of the United States. This meant that a lot of people avoided it to avoid getting on the Native Americans’ bad side.
