The two islands of the island nation New Zealand are called North Island and South Island. New Zealand has a total area of 268,021 square kilometers and has an estimated total population of more than 4 million people. The North Island or Te Ika-a-Maui has an area of 113,729 square kilometers and has a total population of more than 3 million people. It is composed of twelve urban areas where half are officially cities.

These areas are as follows: Auckland, Tauranga, Hamilton, Whangarei, Gisborne, Rotorua, Hastings, Napier, New Plymouth, Palmerston North, Whanganui and Wellington. The South Island or Te Waipounamu has an area of 150,437 square kilometers and has a total population of more than 1 million people. It is divided into 7 regions namely Tasman, Nelson, Marlborough, West Coast, Canterbury, Otago and Southland.
