The mountains separated the people who were living in the cities in the mountains. The Balkans' major mountain ranges ended up in Greece, which divided the country into mesas, plateaus, and small valleys. The cities became independent city-states. The landscape made it difficult for Greeks to unite under a single government.

It was also a challenge to farm appropriately, utilize transportation, and trade between cities-states. Due to the absence of communication between these cities-states, these cities became more independent, and they had to rely on their communities. Overall, the Greeks felt isolated and ripped apart from their own culture.

They isolated (separated) communities. The mainlands of Greek happens to be a peninsula. The mainland includes many islands that spread through various seas, including the Ionian Sea, the Aegean Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea. Greece also has several mountains.

These seas and mountains are what divides Greece into the various regions that Greece has. This makes the people of Greece feel isolated from one another. One of the reasons for this is that it is hard for people to communicate because they must travel through the sea or land to get to one another.

Whenever somebody mentions Helen of Troy whose face launched a thousand ships, we always instantaneously think about the Greeks. The Greek mainland is a peninsula with hundreds of small islands spread throughout the Mediterranean Sea, Aegean Sea and Ionian Sea. There are also mountains in Greece – a lot to be exact as it covers more than half of Greece.

The sea and mountains divided Greece into regions which, in turn, made the Greeks feel isolated from each other. It was hard for them to communicate effectively with each other as it was hard to travel by land. Of course they could use the sea to go to another place to communicate with other people, but it was still hard because there are too many islands in Greece.
