Theravada (1st turning of the wheel of dharma) - most orthodox form, closest to buddhas dharma. textual - triptaka sets out rules of monastic order. monks follow the rules or precepts most closely, and only they can achieve nirvana.mahayan (2nd turning) - follow buddhas dharma (4 noble truths, etc.) but buddha becomes celestial and godlike. pragmatic needs can be addressed by worship, but eternal qs through nirvana (possible for anyone but most likely for monks).varayana (3rd turning) - more celestial but still adheres to buddhas doctrine. draws upon sutras of mahayan buddhism, but includes kanjur (later accounts of buddhas teachings and esoteric practices). practitioners follow monastic orders. ossible to achieve nirvana through instruction by lama or guru.
