East and west germany were reunified as a single nation in 1990. while this provided many new freedoms for germans from the east, the rebuild- ; ing of eastern germany required a huge amount of money. to face these challenges, unpopular new taxes had to be raised. at the same time, large numbers of immigrants continued to come to * germany from other nations because of germanys liberal immigration laws. the presence of these foreigners, many of them refugees, made me economic situation even more difficult, and some germans became hostile toward these immigrants. onder these circumstances, the older nazi ideas about the superiority of a pure aryan race became popular with some native germans, leading them to harass and attack foreigners.
