The 'Merkle Boner' that alledgedly (and in essence did) cost the Giant's the 1908 NL pennant was:
A. Getting doubled up on a bunt that was popped up & let drop on the ground. Then next batter singled, but Merkle had been erased from second & didn t score. B. Tagging up too soon, scoring what appeared to be the winning run only to be called out on the appeal. C. Merkle failed to touch first base on a game winning HIT & was later tagged out after the celebration D. Merkle failed to touch second on a game winning HIT & was forced out later after the celebration. E. Markle scored the winning run as his team swarmed the plate, but the opposition insisted he never touched home plate & he was tagged out later.
Merkle failed to touch second on a game winning hit & was forced out later after the celebration.-johnny evers of tinkers to evers to chance fame grabbed a ball (but possibly not the ball), got the umpires attention as the fans swarmed the polo grounds... evers convinced the umpire merkle had not touched second base (true), a common practice by players at the time.... the umpire ruled the force out remained & the run was taken off the board, along with a giants win ~ because the field was covered with celebrating fans... the game, the nl ruled would only be made up in case of a tie, which of course happened ~ and the cubs of course won. ensuring merkle bonehead status.
