Communist East Germany and Democratic West Germany. After the collapse of Germany in 1945, the country was divided into 4 zones. These zones include The British, French, American, and Soviet zones. Each zone was controlled by its superpower. The western zones and the Soviet zones had a breakdown of reparation in 1946.
The 3 zones in the west (French, British, and American zones) were merged as one. Germany was now partitioned into two: Democratic West Germany and Communist East Germany. East German soldiers build barbed wire and bricks to form a barrier between the East and western region of the country. This sealed off all access that existed between East and West Berlin.
