The name of the national flower of South Africa is Protea. There are some people who are surprised that this flower will be chosen by South Africa when there are so many blooms that can be considered more attractive. This particular flower is known to be resilient. This is something that a lot of people hope to be.

Flowers are usually delicate and can immediately die. The resilience of the Protea makes it very hardy and well-regarded all over South Africa. Some of their national teams come with names that are based on this flower. There are also some people who believe that this flower can signify good change and hope for what lies ahead.

Protea
The protea

The protea, a particularly hardy and somewhat unattractive flower, is named after the minor Greek oceanic deity Proteus. The national cricket team is called the Proteas, as opposed to the Springboks (or Amabokoboko) - rugby; and Bafana Bafana - soccer/football.
