A computer has different ports according to the connections and the devices to which it is connected. A LAN is a local area network. These are actually groups of computers that are connected together in a single building. They are high-speed connections and often employed in modern institutes. A MAN connection or the metropolitan connection takes in many buildings, connecting computers in different buildings at the same time.

For instance, the IUB is an example of a metropolitan area network. There are also other networks such as WAN, which a wide area network is. It is usually not restricted however; it tends to remain within a country.
