How can you say that a pathogen is a microorganism that causes diseases?

Viruses are pathogens as well, even if they are not alive. A pathogen is a disease causing organism or agent (as in the case ofviruses). We call viruses that cause disease "viral pathogens." When a virus takes over the genome of a cell, it becomes at that point in time, and for all intents and purposes, "alive," hence, pathogenic. I hope this helps.
