Pound wooden pegs in all four corners and put a tin can on each peg. In the novel, “By the Great Horn Spoon!” a person can stake a claim by pounding wooden pegs on each corner of the area and placing a tin can on each peg.

By the Great Horn Spoon is a novel published in 1963 by Sid Fleischman. It is a children’s novel about the story of Jack, a 12-year-old boy that wanted to search for gold in California so that he and Praiseworthy can help his Aunt Arabella, who had fallen on hard times, in finding ways to save their home in Boston.
