The line “Both that morning equally lay in leaves no step had trodden back.” is the line stating that the two roads appeared similar that morning. The poem has the setting of the autumn day. The title of the poem is "the road not taken."

At the beginning of the poem, the speaker or poet was faced with a decision on which road to follow, given the fact that the roads actually looked like. The speaker expressed that he thinks both paths are good, but the speaker is just one person who cannot travel down two different roads at a time.

The speaker later expressed that he would keep the first road for another day knowing how way leads on to a way, he expressed his doubt on coming back. This means that the speaker chose the first road, and he will not change the course of his sojourn to travel the other road.
