Beowulf tells about how he survived the swimming match with Breca, to Unferth. This scene occurs in the old and famous English epic poem called Beowulf. It is composed of around 3182 alternative lines. It can be considered as the oldest long poem that has survived to this date, in English literature. Scholars have been investigating the date of the formation of this poem but there are conflicts.

Some people say that it was written between the period 975 and 1025. The author of the poem remains an anonymous anglo-saxon poet. For ease, historians and scholars refer to him as the Beowulf poet.
