The large intestines remove the fecal matter from the body. It is the second to last stop in the digestive system. Technically, the fecal matter passes through the rectum to end its journey, but that’s part of the large intestine. The small intestine feeds into the large intestine. Both intestines strip the food of any vitamins and minerals, as well as most of the water, before passing it through the rectum.

The esophagus, on the other hand, is the long tube that connects your mouth to your stomach. It’s the second stop in the digestive system, and uses a method called peristalsis to move the food from your mouth to your stomach. It’s just the muscles in your esophagus pushing your food down systematically.
