There are some people who may become confused when they need to use words that sound the same. “Are” and “our” are two words that sound the same when they are used.

You will use “are” when you need to use the present tense of the word “is.” On the other hand, “our” is a type of pronoun that you would use when you are referring to yourself and to other people who will be doing the same thing that you have to do or will be sharing the same things with you.

To use these two words in sentences, you can do these: “The cats are making a lot of noises at night.” or when you need to use “our,” “Our cats are making a lot of noises at night.

Are, and our are two words of the English language. Though they may sound similar, they are not interchangeable words, and there are various differences between them. One of the reasons for this is that they are two different types of speeches. The word our is an adjective.

It is used to describe ownership of a noun. An example of using the word our in a sentence is "Thomas is our leading sales agent for the month." Are is a verb. An example of using the word are in a sentence is, "Are you going to the dance later tonight?"

There are so many English words you would think are the same just by the way they sound. “Our” and “are” are two examples of these words. However, the fact that both are similar in sound does not mean they are similar in meanings. In fact, “are” and “our” belong to different parts of speech. The word “our” is used mostly as an adjective. As an adjective, it means “belonging to us”.

For example, you can include the word in a sentence to show that something belongs to you, your family, and even your country. For instance, “this is our territory, and we must be willing to protect it.” Another example is: “I will be waiting for our John till he comes back.” On the other hand, the word “are” is used as a verb. It is used as a second-person singular/plural simple present of the word “be.” For example, John, where are you going?

“Are” as a word is actually the present and also the plural form of the word “be.” It can also be used in the second and third person. The word is a verb that is employed to showcase a state of being. It is often used as a simple verb and also as an auxiliary or aiding verb.

The word can be traced back to the Old English word “Aaron,” which was used then as the conjugation of the term “be.” Its initial use as a word that can replace the word “be” was in the 1600s. The English word “our,” on another side is used in referencing something that belongs to the person speaking and some other people. The word “our” is an adjective, which is basically the possessive form of the word “we.” It can also be used in the plural form and also as an attributive adjective.

"Our" and "are" are two different words entirely, and they can never be used interchangeably because they belong to different parts of speech. The only reason why the two words can be confused for each other is that they have similar sounds. One of the ways to differentiate between the two words is by looking at their meanings. ‘Our’ is an adjective that can be used to describe something that belongs to us.

Most times, the word 'our' is used before a person's name to show that such an individual is a member of one's family or a friend. For example, I am going to see John after the match. The word 'are,' on the other hand, is a verb which is used as a second-person singular simple present of 'be.'

For example, Chris, are you listening? It can be used as a first-person plural simple present of be. For example, we are going to react to the allegation at the right time. It can also be used as a second-person plural simple present of being, and as a third-person plural simple present of be.
