Duly is pronounced as “dewly,” while dully is pronounced with the “uh” sound. To do something, dully means to do it in a dull or boring manner. Too often, individuals use this word when they mean duly, which means properly. Something duly done is executed in a boring manner.

Duly is an adverb, meaning doing something in the proper or unexpected way, or at the accurate or expected time in accordance with what is necessary or appropriate. An example of using the word duly is: “The teacher was talking to the class in a duly manner.” Dully is an adverb that is procured from the adjective dull. An example of the use o the word dully is: “Ever since I had this injury, my knee has ached dully.”

Some words in the English language can be very confusing because many words are spelled just like, which can make some believe they are the same word. Dully and duly are two of those words that are often confused with one another, for they have just one difference in letters. Dully has an additional l that Duly lacks.

Though they are spelled similar, they do differ in meaning. Dully means that something is done in a dull or poor manner. It often notates that a person did not put any effort into what they were doing. Duly is the opposite of that. Duly is something done correctly

It can be confusing for some people why there are a lot of words in the English language that seem similar but they are not exactly the same. The words “dully” and “duly” can be very confusing because of the one letter difference.

When you say “dully,” this means that you are doing something in a dull manner. You may use this word when you mean to say that you have done something in a not so good way or you did not put a lot of effort into making the item.

You will use the word “duly” when you want to say that you have done something in a proper way.

For example, you were asked to do something and you did it easily.
