An advanced directive is a legal document that itemizes the patient’s conditions about his or her healthcare and decisions being made in advance in the event of their death. In the living will, the person makes clear how to proceed regarding specific lifesaving procedures. The medical services being referred are typically people who are facing terminal care, such as being hooked up to a machine to breathe.

It also pertains to dialysis and the approval or denial of resuscitation. Having a durable power of attorney, on the other hand, puts the authority for decision making into the hands of someone that is trusted, possibly the family of the person.

This situation means that the person would be responsible for the care of the patient if they end up in the hospital, and they are no longer capable of making decisions for themselves. Some of the significant roles that this person will have to include patient advocate, health care agent, healthcare representative, and health care surrogate.
