There are a lot of things that can be used to differentiate between tin and aluminum. Although aluminum was discovered late when compared with the discovery time of tin, it happens to be the most abundant metal on earth and the third most abundant element, while tin happens to be the 49th most abundant element on earth.

The chemical symbol for tin is Sn and has atomic number 50. The chemical symbol for aluminum is Al and has atomic number 13. Both elements are not always in their free state, as they are always extracted from other compounds.

Although both have certain properties that qualify them to be used in the production of cans, aluminum has however, overtaken tin being a less toxic element compared to the tin. Another difference is that aluminum is a better conductor of heat and electricity compared to the tin. Also, tin is not as strong as aluminum.
