There are some major differences between the marimba and the xylophone although they are not glaringly obvious. First of all, the xylophone has different wooden bars that come with different notes that you can play. The marimba will also come with wooden bars but they will be located below so that there would be resonators.

This means that the sound of these wooden bars will definitely change. Another difference is the octaves that are available. The xylophone will have a range of two and a half to four octaves. Marimbas will have a larger range as compared to the xylophone. Usually, the marimba will have up to three to five octaves.
