When you say pure substances, this means that this would only be composed of one element. There are also times when it would be composed of a compound. A homogenous mixture, on the other hand, will be composed of different compounds or elements. Another thing that you will notice is when you say homogenous; this means that the mixture looks the same all throughout.
There are times when you may not even notice that there are different elements that are placed within the mixture. They just look like one element or compound. A pure substance is always homogenous, but a homogenous compound is not always a pure substance.
