Pearls have been used in jewelry for several years, and there are many famous brands like the Mikimoto pearl, which comes in all sizes and is extremely expensive. Amazingly, something so beautiful can be created from a single grain of sand. When an oyster opens its’ shell, sometimes sand can enter and sit on the soft flesh of its’ body.

Through time the oyster created a coating to help relieve the irritation, and a beautiful pearl is formed. Mother of pearl is lining the inside the shell of the oyster, and it produces the substance known as nacre; that creates the substance to cover the sand and form the pearl. The actual pearl is shaped like a bead, and the mother of pearl is used for things like watch faces.
