A motor skill is a learned capability to produce a specific movement outcome with the utmost certainty. The purpose of a motor skill is to improve the ability to perform the skill successfully and reduce the level of difficulty it takes to accomplish it.

Gross motor skills are developed for the duration of the infancy stage, while fine motor skills are learned during the preschool age. Two concrete examples of gross motor skills include a baby learning to crawl or walk. A few other examples include learning how to balance, standing up straight, major muscle coordination, body awareness, and spatial orientation.

Motor skills will vary considerably in terms of the appropriate functioning of the brain, joints, skeleton, and nervous system. Motor skills are often learned and acquired throughout a person’s lifetime.
