The chief difference between MPEG4 and MP4 is their function. MPEG4 is a video encoding algorithm that determines how the images are compressed and converted into data.

An MP4, on the other hand, is a media container that was created to carry information encoded by an MPEG4. It does not influence the resulting quality. An MP4 is interested in how the data for video and audio is stored within the file. It is dedicated to titles, chapters, and encrypted media. It can also be discovered within the MPEG4 requirement, specifically part 14. It is not only the container format under MPEG4, as it is a derivative of the more general MPEG4 and part 12 specification.
