Handke first gained international attention in 1966 after an appearance at a meeting of world-renowned artists belonging to the Gruppe forty-seven in Princeton, New Jersey. Handke has garnered many honors, including the 1973 Georg Buchner Prize. In 1975, Handke was awarded the German Film Award for best script. He also won the Vilenica International Literary Prize in 1987.
Hanke won the Franz Kafka Prize in 2009. In 2018, he received the Austrian Nestroy Theater Prize for Lifetime Achievement. In 2019, he won the coveted Nobel Prize in literature, which not only called attention to his work but created much controversy.
