VCD stands for a video compact disc. It has been the standard for playing back video recordings on a cd. This model aims to provide video that is similar to VHS, which was the technology during that time. The digital video disc, known as the DVD, is the current technology that plans to replace the VCD and has been relatively successful in this regard due to a plethora of features that have been added to the standard.

A standard VCD can contain up to 800 MB of data, while DVD's contain 4.7 GB of data, which is about six times more. The higher data capacity allows it to hold videos with much higher resolutions and better image quality than that of VCD's. In place of using two discs to store a single movie, like in VCD's, you only need one DVD with room to spare.
