MP3 stands for MPEG Layer 3. It is a file format for audio files. It was developed by Fraunhofer Institute, and it was first released in 1995. MP3 has a high compression ratio for audio files. It uses a lame encoder.

MP3 compresses audio files to less than 10 percent of the original size of the CD file. MP3 is well supported by many music devices. However, using this file format can cause loss of sonic details must especially with high frequency and low bitrates.

WMA is the acronym for Windows Media Audio that was developed by Microsoft. WMA was released in 1999 for use in Microsoft’s Window Media Player. WMA has better sound quality support for low bitrates, which leads to smaller file sizes.

Both are formats that eliminate a portion of information to reduce the final file size. MP3 format compresses a file to less than ten percent of the original cd quality file without suffering any loss of value. MP3 is a file format for audio files that use a lossy compression mechanism where data that the software deems unusable is removed.

WMA or windows media audio is a format that was developed by Microsoft, which uses the same standard as MP3 to reduce the file size. MP3 formats use the lame encoder while Microsoft has established its encoder for the WMA format. WMA format can execute better compression while keeping the same levels of sound quality, especially with lower bitrates. The drawback of WMA is the fact that it is proprietary, and this limits how and when you may use your files.

The move from CD players to solid-state music players was stimulated in part by the introduction of the MP3 format. The MP3 format compresses a file to less than 10 percent of the original CD-quality file without experiencing any loss of excellent sound. MP3 is a file format for audio files that utilizes a compression mechanism where details that the software deems to be of little or no use is removed.

WMA or Windows Media Audio is a format that is created by Microsoft that uses the same principle as MP3 to minimizes the file size. The downfall of WMA is that it has limited possibilities of where you can play your files. Almost all media devices support MP3. WMA generates better sound at low bitrates compared to MP3. MP3 is the industry standard, while Microsoft develops WMA specifically for their products.
