What is the difference between Router and Access Points?

Access point and wireless router are often confused by people; however, there are several differences between the two. A router is a device that sends packets of data to their destinations. On the other hand, an access point is a device that lets wireless devices to have a connection to it by antennas. Most homes use a wireless router to connect to the Internet while an access-point is commonly used in offices as there are more users in the offices that need to transfer data from one another.

Without an access point, a handful of employees will not be enabled to submit essential documents through e-mails. A router can be used as an access point, but access could not be used as a router as access points still rely on the router to build a bridge between users and a network.

It is hard to believe that there was a time when we did not have wireless networks. It seems that it has been around for a long time. However, it hasn’t. People are still unsure of the meanings of routers and access points. They have probably heard these words, but they even do not know the difference between the two.

The router is perhaps the one that is more familiar because it has been around for quite some time. The router is the main box that is important to know that it sits in one part of the house. The access points are connected to the router. However, it is the router’s job to send the information to the correct device that has that wifi.
