A barometer is specifically designed to measure atmospheric pressure. Manometers measure pressures, lower than atmospheric pressure. With a barometer, one end of the glass tube is sealed, and it contains a vacuum. With a manometer, both ends of the tube are open to the outside.

The barometer is more helpful in weather forecasting based upon climatic changes. Pressure tendency can forecast interim changes in the weather. Multiple measurements of air pressure are used within surface weather analysis to help find surface trough, high-pressure systems, and frontal boundaries.
